Volunteer Service

“I am a twenty year old young man from Germany.  I have been at Plowshare Farm as a volunteer for nearly one year.  As I end my time of service, I am grateful for all I have learned and become.  I am looking forward to returning to Plowshare Farm after I finish my studies, to see how everyone is doing and of course to see people busy at their tasks.”

--Christopher Witt

People who join us for a year of volunteer service, often young people from across the U.S. and around the world, are an essential tone in the music of Plowshare Farm. While the rest of us remain more stable, people who come for a year of service weave in and out, adding variety and a larger perspective to the community. Each year 7-10 people, usually younger people but often others as well, join the community for a period of volunteer service. The shortest term is during the summer when 1-2 people serve for 6-8 weeks helping with summer activities. Most join for a period of 11-12 months. Most begin their term of service in late August and end their term the next August, while one or more serve from spring to spring. People seeking volunteer service opportunities find us through several domestic and international service organizations, or independently.

People who give their time and energy in this way add tremendously to daily life at Plowshare - lightening the load for others and bringing diversity, fresh interests, and friendship to all of us in the community. In return, we hope people who join us for the year gain a broadened perspective, a deeper feeling of compassion for fellow human beings, and a sense of the possibility of another way of living with each other and the land.
